"I can't do this anymore."
Melanie blurted it out as soon as Nathan picked up the phone. She had to get it out immediately, or she wouldn't be able...
There was a long pause, then Nathan asked, "What?" His voice was oddly gentle, and she loved him for that.
"This," she told him, knowing it was imprecise, not particularly able to care. Her heart was banging in her chest. "Us. Aaron. All of it."
Nathan drew in a sharp breath. "Mel... what are you saying?"
Oh, God, he was going to make her spell it out. Melanie took a deep breath, her throat hurting. "I want a divorce."
He was silent for a beat, then another. She swallowed around the block in her throat and waited.
"Okay," he said, at last.
Just that. Okay. Just like that.
Melanie exhaled. Just like that.
"Okay," she replied, and wished she felt more certainty.
