Notes: Wow, so it's been a while since I've been here. Sorry about that! I'm hoping to change that soon, but let's see how things go. Hi everyone! Got to catch up reading before the semester starts again.
Axel woke up to the sound of ocean waves crashing against the shore of a beach, but that couldn’t be right. The last thing he remembered before he closed his eyes was the ceiling of the castle he ended up in. Axel sat up and almost fell back from the sand beneath him. He really was on a beach. He touched his stomach, his cheek, and his arms, but didn’t feel anything. His wounds disappeared along with the scratches on his neck and his heartbeat.
Axel pressed his hand against his chest and felt nothing. He sat back on the sand and ran his fingers through his hair. After the blow he took from that celestial weapon he knew his chance for survival was slim, but he thought he had a small chance to come back. He had a lot of things he didn’t finish and wouldn’t finish. He sighed and looked out at the ocean. He wondered if his sacrifice worked.
“Yes it did.”
Axel looked over at the woman who walked over to him. She wore a one piece swimsuit as she pushed a lock of her dark hair behind her ear. The chestnut bracelet with small shells on it matched the color of her wrist as she placed her hand on her waist. He wondered if she knew how they ended up on a beach. He opened his mouth, but she spoke before he could voice his questions.
“The reason why you’re here it worked. The war is coming to an end and your troop is safe.”
“Wait, how did you know that? Where am I?”
“You’re in one of the waiting places for the Second Great Plane. One of your favorite places was the beach so that’s where you ended up. My name is Alora and I’ll be your guide.”
“Oh, so I’m dead.”
Alora nodded. “Sorry, but you were on the schedule.”
“I see...” Axel hummed as he picked up a handful of sand and watched it slip between his fingers. He couldn’t dispute that his injuries weren’t grave, getting stabbed by a Celestial weapon could end any Shadow Demon, though it was a lot to take in. How did someone take that they weren’t going back to the living plane?
Axel picked up more sand and turned to the ocean. He did love the beach. There was something calming about it that made him visit it whenever he could. He joked that he could pass as a Water Demon with the way he loved the beach. He could spend the whole day at the beach with his family and friends. He loved it even more when he could bring his own little family. He closed his eyes at the thought of Seth and Claire. He wondered if Claire knew he wasn’t going to come back.
Axel dusted the sand off his hands before he turned to her.
“Hey Alora?”
“Yes?”
“I-Is my family safe?”
Alora nodded. “They’re safe. Once we get you settled you can visit them in their dreams, at the spirit council building, and during the annual Festival of Spirits. There are a few more times the veil between the worlds are weak enough to see them.” She walked closer to him and offered her hand. “I know you didn’t plan on leaving so early, but you know…”
Axel gave a small smile. “Sometimes things go ahead of schedule.”
Alora smiled back. “Right, well, are you ready to go? Or do you want to stay for a while?”
Axel shook his head and took her hand. “Let’s go.”
Alora helped him up and pointed to the hut not too far away from them. “There’s a door in there that leads to the main office. We can get you settled in there.”
“Alright.” Axel nodded as he brushed his hands against his swim trunks. He walked alongside Alora to the hut that would start his new life as a ghost. He felt bad about the things he would miss. The anniversaries with Claire, Seth’s milestones, visiting his mother and siblings, hanging out with Bernard, having another little one, and the list went on and on. However, if Axel didn’t go through with his plan Claire and Seth would be here instead. He would do it all over again to make sure that didn’t happen.
Axel took one more look at the ocean before he walked in the hut.
He hoped Claire wouldn’t be too mad when they met again.
