“I’ve brought Lady Madeline,” Georges said leading her in.

Claude struggled to sit up in bed. He looked to the right where his man, Gautlier, sat.

Madeline curtseyed to the king.

“I’ve called all of you here today for a special reason.”

The three of them waited for him to continue.

“I’m not long for this world,” Claude started.

“Don’t think like that, Your Majesty,” Georges said.

Claude held up his hand. “I welcome it. I’ll be with my Rosanna and I’ll see my dear Anne again.”

Georges sighed.

Claude turned to Madeline.

“You’ve helped me take good care of Michel. I’m sure he’ll be a great king.”

“Like his grandfather,” Madeline said.

“You are too kind, Lady du Bois.”

Claude coughed. “I’m making Lady du Bois the Count of Verste.”

Madeline made a noise. Gaultier jumped up.

“WHAT?” Gaultier said in a loud tone.

“Calm down,” Georges warned.

“Your Majesty, the Verste lands have long been in the royal family. You can’t just give the title to a minor lord’s widow.”

“Excuse me?” Madeline said in an icy tone.

“Madeline is the grandmother of the future king. She’s helped shaped him into the man he is now. He’ll carry on the Alcheri line.”

Gaultier scoffed.

Claude turned to Madeline.

“Do you accept the title?”

Madeline smiled graciously. “Of course, Your Majesty.”

Claude smiled back. He turned to Georges.

“I want you to make the plans for the ceremony,” he told him.

Georges nodded.

Claude sighed. “Now leave me. Soon I’ll rest for eternity.”
