Summary: The Followers of Morgause move against the humans.

Kaija set the last chunk of obsidian with the rest before wiping her fingers on her pants -- she had never encountered a basement that wasn't grimy.

One of these five pieces of obsidian was hers -- a small piece of herself at the center of it, an island lighthouse in a sea of potential. She didn't know who had made the others -- she could assume, they only had so many Necromancers -- but she didn't know. In case the worst happened.

She made her way back upstairs, stepping over the dead guard. He had moved on immediately -- must be nice, to live a life so empty of strife and regret. Through the lacquered oak hallway, into the main chamber -- a quick smile at the guard who had given her directions to the bathroom she hadn't used.

That man stood at a podium, barking nonsense at a sea of degenerates. "The success of Krixos relies on human hands; human hardship; human sacrifice. Our blood and sweat built this city; our blood and sweat will keep her healthy and safe." Cheers. MP Amelia Graham was up for re-election, and this bastard wanted her seat. Wizards had one representative, and they just couldn't leave her alone.

So much for progress.

"One hundred and fifty years ago we took back our land, our homes; we cannot forget what our predecessors sacrificed to keep what belongs to us in our own hands." Kaija flowed through the crowd, yanking a smile onto her face, keeping her fists unclenched, her magic shoved down to the very pit of her self. "We cannot allow their Assembly to lull us into a false sense of security; we must remain ever vigilant." She bit back a laugh -- on that, they agreed.

"These usurpers, these sinners against nature must not be allowed to regain control of our city, through blood or through so-called 'progress'." The door wasn't far. She touched the key pendant hanging from her neck; as long as she kept calm, as long as she didn't touch her magic, ignored that part of herself, pretended she was no wizard at all, the alarm would not go off.

"They must keep their place. They must never forget who Krixos belongs to: normal, natural, proper human beings."

It wasn't as loud as Kaija had imagined, the incessant beeping more annoying than anything else. Both guards stared at her. She stared back, body tight, fighting against the wave of panic -- she lost the fight, turned and ran, stopping just outside to spell both doors shut, the wood cracking with the force.

"What happ--"

"Now, Ada!"

Ada gathered her magic around herself, clutching her own obsidian chunk, so full it was nearly overflowing; the doors burst into flame. The fire quickly spread to the whole front side of the building, Ada glowing in the strength of her working. Kaija stood behind her, fear and joy threading through her heart.

Ada dropped her arms, nearly dropping the obsidian as well -- Kaija grabbed it and Ada, holding the other wizard steady. "The other doors are barred?"

"Yes. Courson spelled the windows unbreakable. He's waiting in the car." Ada shuddered. "That hurt a little."

Kaija kissed her ebony hair. "Like running a marathon."

They could hear screaming over the roar of the fire; fearful, at first, then the unmistakable shrieks of pain. Kaija grinned, showing her teeth.

"I should... I should push it faster." Ada trembled in Kaija's grip. "So they... so it's faster."

Kaija shook her head. "It's fine. Your fire will get the job done." She tugged Ada towards the car. "We should leave before someone sees us."

"But... they're in so much pain. Isn't it better to--"

Kaija sneered. "They're humans, Ada. They don't deserve mercy."

Oh man. Meeting fanaticism with more fanaticism is definitely not progress.

This made me feel sick on a couple of levels; one because open bigotry never, ever ends well, and two because terrorism also never ends well, and oh god the ending. :/ Wonderfully written on your part, though.
