Riluke's letter came less than a week after Kirana's. There had been no time for her attempted aversion to even be in position, let alone succeed.

Kesshare took a deep breath before giving vent to her fury. She'd lost near two decades of investment into her son, in a single, still-murky stroke. And said loss would likely also lead to a destruction of the internal integrity of Feredar, making it more of a burden than a gift when she absorbed it into her empire.

Which was not to say she wouldn't--Feredar had far too much territory and historical power to leave independent, particularly on the border of the desert. Her empire would never be secure unless Feredar was a part of it. No, Feredar was still necessary, it would just be a sinkhole for money and other resources for decades to come.

She cleaned up the twisted, melted fragments that she'd left behind, then dashed off a message to her brother-in-law. Ineku would need comfort she couldn't provide. And he was still a valuable resource. Kesshare despised waste.

And yet this might still be salvageable. True, in Isshiri she'd lost time and resources, and a valuable potential diplomat and intelligence officer, but he had at least accomplished his mission. Amassa would be at last forced to action. She could use his presumption of her maternal grief to mitigate the potential damage to her future plans, even. If she advocated a certain amount of restraint...

Yes, this could be salvaged.

She drafted a careful note to Amassa, with what she hoped were the right touches of grief, begging him to start planning the military operation as soon as possible. She reread that one several times, spending significantly longer on it than Utoki's summons, but was finally satisfied.

That done, she could properly consider retribution. Which there would be, of course. For all the time and effort wasted, all that potential unrealized. Kesshare put together a letter to Kirana, asking for more detail on her vision of her brother's death.

When Kesshare found the person or persons responsible, Lidare's death would seem quick and painless in comparison.

She reread the three notes one more time, then sealed them all and sent them off. A particularly disastrous setback, yes, but not an irredeemable one. She would still have her empire.

Kesshare was nothing if not adaptable.

Okay, this was even cooler than I hoped for, when I gave you this prompt. The way she's so in control over it, even over her rage-- fabulous.

Adaptable, indeed. I have to admire her pragmatism. She's not going to let anything get in her way.
