Sarah looks at her daughter – laughing cheerfully while swaying back and forth – concerned, because she knows what’s still to come and knows that it will come soon.
It is only when the swingset starts moving all by itself – while the leaves and the branches of the trees stay motionless – that Sarah knows, really knows, her little girl has inherited Simon’s gifts.
Sarah sets herself on the swingset next to her daughter – just watching her, staying silent, offering silent comfort – knowing Caithlynn is worried about the future, her future.
It’s a lonely sight, now Caithlynn is gone, the garden with the swingset no one will use again – until, perhaps, after the war, when they have won and peace has returned.
Gently Sarah swings back and forth, tired eyes watching the distance, waiting – for the world to end or her daughter to come home.
