Mari leaned back on the bed as she listened to Daniel play his guitar. She picked up the book she was reading and flipped through it. Though it was interesting, she couldn’t really pay attention to it.

Daniel stopped playing and sighed heavily.

“What is it?” Mari asked from the bed.

“Do you ever just wish there was a place where everyone got alone? No fighting, no lies, none of that?”

Mari smiled. “That place will never exist, it seems.”

Daniel sighed and put down the guitar. He went over to his window and stared out of it.

“I think my parents are getting divorced,” he said quietly.

Mari sat up.

“What?”

“They’ve been constantly arguing over everything. If it isn’t over my little sister and brother, then it’s about me and how to deal with my little problem.”

“Do they mean?”

He looked over his shoulder and shot her a small smile.

“Yeah they mean the weed. My mom is blaming Dad about MY problem.”

Mari got off the bed and came up to him.

“You know you could stop smoking,” Mari said putting her cheek against his back.

She felt him laughing.

“I could, but I won’t.”

Mari stepped back from him. He turned around and picked up his guitar.

“But I will focus on trying to act better. I’m going to graduate this year. I know my mom thinks I don’t care, but I do.”

“I know you do,” Mari said smiling softly.

Daniel smiled back at her. He started strumming the guitar again as Mari picked up her book.
