The townsfolk scatter when the wagon rattles into town.
There's nothing scary about the wagon itself, or the bored man driving it. The horses always look normal - always one color, black or white or brown, mane and all. But they say that if you look at them too long they start to look like something else, and they turn to stare at you with one large eye, never blinking, until you finally look away.
They stop from time to time, and the bored man goes from shop to shop, picking up supplies and loading them on the seat beside him, never in the wagon proper. It's always the same man, swarthy and quiet, and unfailingly polite. Whoever they are, they clearly have no shortage of money; it's why the townsfolk don't dare turn them away. Money's been in short supply since the gold in the nearby hills ran out.
They've all whispered rumors about what they're keeping in there. Some say it's a man with white skin and red eyes who can't stand the sun. Some say it's something else, something valuable and unknowable and dangerous. Whatever it is, they don't know of anyone who's laid eyes on it and lived.
Every time he visits, the man will stop by the tavern and bring somebody out with him. He selects his targets by some odd criteria that's known only to him. Men or women, young or old, handsome or plain or even ugly... they all follow him, smiling as if some dream of theirs is coming true. They climb into the wagon, never to be seen again. Climb into a nightmare, the others whisper.
A boy once tried to catch a glimpse while one of them climbed into the wagon. The townsfolk say he's blind now, and never speaks.

I've removed miniature; is that the thing that needed tags?
And here is your novelty bead for Pilgrims!

And yes, I wrote this originally in 100 words, then decided it needed to be longer.
