Laith is a piece of glass not yet worn down by the crash of the ocean’s waves, all shining youth and jagged edges and browned skin glowing in the coastal sun. Beyond her crooked grin is a set of short, sharp teeth like those of the beasts prowling her grandfather’s stories, and her voice is tinged with salt—the kind that clings to her no matter how hard she scrubs. Perhaps one day, her edges will round out and her crystalline smile will cloud over, but she has never cared for one days and she doesn’t see much reason to start.
