This is ridiculous. You are ridiculous. You’re here to do a goddamned job, not pine.

Mariko had lost track of the number of times she’d reminded herself of that since arriving on the CSP Station. And, to be fair, her ridiculous pining hadn’t interfered with her job--yet--but that didn’t make it any less ridiculous.

It wasn’t that Lux wasn’t human--okay, maybe part of it was. She knew better than most people the statistics on inter-species romances. Namely, they sucked. But the stupid butterflies in her stomach every time she passed the tall, pretty alien in the hallway, let alone actually talked to her, didn’t give a damn about statistics.

And she’d come close a couple times, to spilling everything--Hi, I know you barely know me and I barely know you but I think you’re really pretty and I would very much like to play with your hair and kiss you. Is that something your species does? Kissing?

…yeah, maybe it was better if she kept her mouth shut.

It had never been this hard before. Not with any of her other girlfriends. And maybe that was the species difference talking, because she didn’t want to cause an intergalactic incident by hitting on a pretty alien with pretty hair and unknown taboos. Yeah. That was probably it.

On the other hand, maybe Lux’s species didn’t have any weird relationship taboos. She couldn’t really know until she tried, right?

Besides, maybe the fact that it was this hard meant that this time it was True Love.

Or maybe you’re just being ridiculous.

Mariko banged her head against her desk. Subtly. Stop. Freaking. Pining.

Easier said than done.
