They'd reached the end of the desert, Riluke and her escort; the sweeping sands were behind them and the mountains sloped gently upward ahead, a tangible barrier, a quiet, inescapable proof that she could never go back.

The eastern side of the mountains was dry, and increasingly cold, rock giving way to scrubby brush giving way to rock again, until they reached the summit.

The western side of the mountains was wetter, driving snow slamming them as they dragged their way through the pass and then down, into warming dense forests.

After a brief discussion, they took the longer, harder route northwest, staying in the foothills, skirting the borders of Feredar and Heartwood.

They turned south again, plunging back into dense, wet forest--Riluke hated the way the mud stuck to her shoes and missed the driving, biting sand; she'd even be grateful to have it blowing in her mouth if it meant being away from this muck.

They reached the port city of Asendar and the sea, and it was a surprise--something in the water made it more green then blue, and Riluke couldn't help but stare.

Huddled on the boat, Riluke turned away from the eastern horizon--the ocean, the mountains, the hostile territories meant a clean break, and a strange new world and future awaited her.

Six months after reaching the mountains at the western edge of her lost homeland, Riluke felt sand under her feet again.
