Nida doesn't want to lose herself.

It's such a complicated thing, owing loyalty and love in two very different directions. Some days, it feels like she lives on a razors edge; on those days, she thinks it would be so much easier if she were like her sister Rema, cold and ruthless, with the Movement and the cause outweighing all other considerations.

She hasn't stopped believing in it, of course. The cause. It's just all so much messier than her sister thinks. Or it is for Nida, anyway.

Some days, she thinks it might be easier if she didn't believe in it so much. If she could just surrender to her love for her husband, her children, and forget the rest. Just love them.

She does love them, of course. She can't help herself. It's just that she can't forget the other part of herself, either. The part that works against Sorell and her sons.

In the end, she resigns herself to the edge. She can't give up either part of her--she would be a stranger to herself. A part of her thinks that to cut herself to pieces like that would make her unworthy of both sides. Of the justice she seeks, of the family she loves.

But, oh, sometimes she wishes it were simpler.
