Coming back together, falling back in love, had been so delicate, so gradual. There were too many scars left between them for anything else.

But some things either were or weren't. Some things required a deliberate step.

A leap of faith.

Mariko wasn't entirely sure how she'd gotten to this point. It wasn't like last time, which had been a heady love-at-first-sight fairy-tale rush, with one thing coming after another. Smooth and simple. Or it had felt that way, anyway.

She knew better now. This wasn't a fairy tale, although Lux was some kind of monster. Probably. Maybe. It was more complicated than that.

And she was ready. For the first time in so long--ten years of healing on her own, then all this time of the two of them healing together--she was ready for another woman's touch.

For Lux's touch.

She reached across the cockpit, ran a featherlight touch along Lux's jawline, pulled her close.

Not their first kiss on this road back, but this one felt different than the last few.

Different from any of the ones the first time around, too.

Lux paused, pulled back, gave her a searching look.

Mariko smiled, her hand drifted down to rest on Lux's narrow chest, feeling the soft hum of her once-familiar heartbeat; so different from any human's; so maybe she imagined it quickening with anticipation.

Lux nodded and leaned in to kiss her again, dark and hot and sweet and probing. Mariko's hands moved, undoing the fastening at Lux's throat and working her shirt open, exposing the skin underneath.

Her lover's hands, with their long, elegant fingers, ghosted along Mariko's sides, gently, so gently; one found its way around to the zipper at her back, pulling it down; leaving her exposed.

Mariko shivered a little, but pressed a kiss against Lux's throat--keep going, I want this, I want you.

She remembered the intimacy of Lux sharing her own scars, years and years ago, and this was something like that. And something not.

But it didn't change anything.

Her dress slid down, puddling at her feet, and she felt the jump in Lux's throat, the thrill of her desire, an alien instrument playing a sweet counterpoint to her own.

She closed her eyes and surrendered to it.
