This doesn't have to be awkward.
Probably not, in theory, but realizing that didn't make it any less awkward. Andrell wasn't sure if his having met the princess once or twice before made it better or worse, now that they were officially engaged.
But it was best to get the awkward phase over with as quickly as possible, probably, which is why he'd asked to see her. The details of the wedding and the disposition of the two crowns and the like were being handled more Officially, but...
For all his father's flaws, Andrell had grown up seeing just how much he'd loved his mother. And while Andrell know better than to expect that from his own marriage--just look at how things had turned out for Kellom and poor Fera--he was holding out hope for at least compatibility.
She was beautiful--as beautiful as his sisters, in a different way. And she was bright, and understood at least partially what kind of pressure he was under. And he would almost certainly barely have to interact with her mother, which was certainly a relief. And he wasn't afraid of her. Not really. Not after a year of assisting mages in their campaigns before they'd taken the city and he the crown. He wasn't.
They'd arranged to meet on the balcony of one of the towers in the Grand Duke's palace. He was a few minutes late, she was probably waiting for him already, and he was dawdling outside the door, trying to put off the inevitable awkward.
He took a deep breath. It doesn't have to be awkward. And it will work out between us.
Somehow.
