Notes: 1958, Edward Iveson; AU (via this piece). I’ve been ill for weeks, but thought I’d might manage a drabble for the New Beginnings challenge & came up with this, and then realised it had to be 500 words, so, whoops: have a random Julia dies AU drabble just to prove i can still vaguely word anyway.
Summary: It’s the end of everything.

The Foreign Secretary presses the receiver to his ear but hears nothing more of the man’s conversation (So terribly sorry, sir); only brakes screeching, thud of impact, and glass shattering.

Everything else shatters, too: life, heart – and with a savage sense of release, his career, shared guilt; all in pieces, the gods satisified at last. Julia.

He replaces the telephone. His hands tremble but his voice is even. “Cancel everything possible – order a car to London.”

“Sir?”

Edward doesn’t look at the secretary. (Not Evans; nevermore Evans, either.) Isn’t it obvious there is only one thing left?

“Emily,” he says.
