Notes: Alan's best friend gets married. Alan is the protagonist for "Devil is a Gentleman" one of my stories set in the Roost Verse.
Carl's fiancée was a beautiful woman with rounded, intelligent features and very clear eyes. She had the world before her in many ways with a respectable practice and a possible position to become tenure track at the local university. She walked in a room like she owned it and if you didn't give her due she would take it from you. Patti was just like that.
Alan had worried about her when they first met. She was somewhat brash and prone to putting her foot in her mouth. But she was a lawyer, that's what they did. He wanted to get along with her, solely because his best friend had been so smitten. "She's beautiful" he told Alan. "She can have any man she wanted."
They were quite the handsome couple; the husband and wife in the picture frames at the local department store. It became rather clear that she thought just as much of Carl as he did of her. Patti overlooked the fact that he had a limp and was more than a little out of shape. "I'm no swimsuit model, why should he be?" No, overlooked wasn't the word, it was more than that.
She could be looking over an email or snarling on the phone in one moment, but if he smiled at her, the lines of her face turned up. She softened for him and he straightened for her. They worked out. The wedding had been a beautiful affair and Alan's best man's speech was very well received. Patti made her way over to Alan during the reception.
"Thank you, it meant the world to Carl that you put up with all this."
"You mean bland white people food?"
She laughed nervously. She always laughed slightly nervously around him. "I mean… the heteronormativity."
"Patti, relax. Carl's been my best friend for decades. I can put up with some of his old WASP relatives trying to relate to me over show tunes." He shrugged and sipped at his glass of wine. "I'm happy to be included. My family doesn't quite keep me in the loop."
She bit her lip at that. "Well, you're family as far as we're concerned. Please, don't … I want you to feel welcome. I'm just… I don't want to do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing."
"You will, though. Happens. I'll let you know if something's wrong, Patti. If we're family it means we forgive each other, right?"
She hugged him then. Alan felt guilty about being so worried.
