For Leyla's twenty-seventh birthday, she and Mariko decided to go camping. It was something she'd always wanted to do, but, both of them having more or less grown up in the city, neither of them had ever been. They thought it would be a magical adventure--love and sex and cake under the stars that Mariko loved, a whole weekend to themselves with no phones or other distractions.

It wasn't really magical--it was freaking cold, and it turned out the woods made all kinds of creepy noises in the night that even Mariko couldn't decode, and, apparently, they really should've researched what poison ivy looked like before going.

Except--except one moment, when they were throwing their stuff together haphazardly, bright and early and both of them in an awful mood, ready to head back to town and just go to that fondue place on the corner like they usually did for special occasions, when Mariko was silhouetted against the dawn, dewdrops sparkling in her tangled hair, and, okay. Yeah. One could hardly blame Leyla for taking the opportunity to attempt to salvage the weekend.

Because sex at dawn, with her beautiful lover glowing under the canopy? That was magic.

Leyla would never, ever make the mistake of going camping again, but that didn't mean she regretted the one time she did.
